About Marc

Born in Rockford, Illinois, Marc Shaw moved to Redlands with his family when he was six years old. He attended Kimberly Elementary, Valley Preparatory School, Moore Junior High and graduated from Redlands High School. During high school, Marc furthered his love of the outdoors by working at Pratt Brothers Sporting Goods, Snow Valley Ski Area, and for the City of Redlands in their Youth Sports Program. He volunteered as a member of the Redlands Bicycle Classic Organizing Committee and became a police Explorer at the Redlands Police Department before transitioning to the California Highway Patrol Explorer Program. After high school, Marc attended Cal State San Bernardino, while still volunteering for the CHP. As his focus became clearer, he knew that the CHP was his calling. He became a dispatcher at age 19 and served in that role until he turned 21 and was accepted to the CHP Academy.

Throughout his career, Marc served in notable assignments throughout the state, including a tour at the State Capitol. He worked closely with the Senate and Assembly Sergeant-At-Arms, as well as members of the Governor’s office to protect visitors and staff alike. As a commander, Marc was responsible for the Department’s telecommunications infrastructure for two years before assuming command of a large metropolitan patrol station in southern California. He worked tirelessly to forge strong relationships with community leaders, elected officials, and other members of the public safety community. In 2011, he was appointed by the State Attorney General to serve on the CLETS Advisory Committee and maintained that assignment until 2019.

Marc was promoted to the rank of Assistant Chief in 2013 and spent the next six years overseeing a variety of patrol and specialty commands throughout southern California, from heavily populated metropolitan areas to desolate regions of the Eastern Sierra. He served as Tactical Commander of the Special Response Team and his experience in civil disturbance and crowd management included numerous deployments, highlighted by the 2016 Presidential Election Protests. Marc closed out his CHP career at the Inland Division Headquarters in San Bernardino, where he was second in command of the largest geographic Division in the state, leading over 600 people.

After a successful career at the CHP, Marc joined the California Department of Food and Agriculture, where he served as an Assistant Chief, overseeing the Compliance and Enforcement Unit. He also started his own small private investigations firm, contracting with public safety entities to conduct internal investigations, pre-employment background investigations and other workplace evaluations.

On October 1, 2022, Marc was appointed as the California Horse Racing Board’s chief law enforcement officer. In his role as the Chief of the Enforcement Division, he is responsible for ensuring the integrity, viability, and safety of those involved in the California horse racing industry. He also oversees the occupational licensing of over 19,000 individuals.

Marc holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Management from Saint Mary’s College and a master’s degree in Homeland Security from the Naval Postgraduate School. He is a graduate of the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Command College and served multiple terms on the Board of Directors for the California Peace Officers’ Association, including a role as 3rd Vice President and two terms as Treasurer.

Marc’s desire to give back to his community has always been an important pillar of his personal life. While living in East Highland, Marc spent five years on the East Highlands Ranch Covenants Committee before he was elected to their Board of Directors. He also served as an Assistant Scoutmaster with Boy Scout Troop 226. Marc was appointed to the City of Highland Planning Commission and served three years in that role.  After returning to Redlands, Marc shared his knowledge as an active citrus farmer and was appointed to the Citrus Preservation Commission. Since 2015, Marc has been the Executive Director of the Redlands Bicycle Classic Committee, and he currently serves as a Planning Commissioner for the City of Redlands.
